Then God said, “Let there be a space to separate the water into two parts!” So God made the space and separated the water. Some of the water was above it, and some of the water was below it. God named that space “sky.” There was evening, and then there was morning. This was the second day.
Genesis 1:6-8 ERV
So, Boom! God decided that He wanted to separate the waters on earth, so He grabbed a handful, threw it up above the Earth, and said, “The earth is lava,” (or at least that’s how I imagine that He did it). Then He called the space between the two sets of water the “sky,” or “Heaven.” And that was the second day.
Whenever I read this story as a child, in the King James Version, I always stumbled over the word “firmament.” It was and is still hard to say without pausing to rehearse it in my head a few times. According to Merriam-Webster, a firmament is, “the vault or arch of the sky: heavens,” (2021, ‘firmament’ Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary). I admit that I mulled over why God put water in the sky in the first place and then it hit me… Rain. Plants, as we know them, need water. Unless someone is coming outside to water a plant, it receives water via rain from the sky.
It’s such a simple thing, but it warms my heart and fills me with joy because it reminds me of Jeremiah 29:11,
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11 NIV
God created the sky to store water, among other things, so that when He created the plants on earth a day later, there would be sustenance for them. God had a plan for water, the sky, plants, and animals when He made them. God is so intentional that He had plans for little things like water and plants. So, what more does that say about His intention in making us? It says, to me, that God has a plan for us.
This is a reminder that we should be intentional in all that we say and do.

The plan is in his hands and God knows what he is doing in and through our lives. Thanks for sharing.

The foresight in splitting the water for dual purpose let’s me know that God has plans and so should we. We need to be ready to adjust to the ultimate planner, God, because his foresight is better than even our best attempts.
