My son, if you accept my words
and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding
Proverbs 2:1-2 NIV
I am currently working on my beach body. The goal is to walk three or four miles at least four to five times a week. One day I was walking in our subdivision finishing up the last mile. A neighbor saw the direction I was going. He said, “Sir, there is a large Alaskan Husky waiting to attack around the corner.”
With this information, I could do one of two things; receive the communication or reject it. The choice was mine. The selection I made determined if I walked into danger or walk away from danger. God gives information. The choice we make with the information will determine if we walk into danger or walk away from danger.
Proverbs 2 shares the benefits of wisdom. By wisdom God protects (v. 8). Wisdom will save from evil people (v. 12), immoral women (v.16), and death (v. 18). However, we are only protected and saved if we do three things.
First, we must Receive. Verse 1 says “my son, if you accept my words. To be saved from the dog I had to receive the words of my neighbor. Wisdom is available to us. The word of God does us no good unless it is received.
Second, we must Respond. Verse 2- says “apply your heart to understanding”. We need to make an active and determined effort to hear and understand the Words that are coming out of God’s mouth which is Wisdom. I asked my neighbor again to ensure that I had a clear understanding of what he said.
Lastly, what I heard and understood, I Rushed Out to put it into practice. Yall, I simply changed to the direction of my walk and avoided the danger I was headed for. Verse 20 says so follow the steps of the good and stay on the path of the righteous.
If you want to be protected and saved, you must receive wisdom, respond to wisdom, and rush out to practice wisdom. Then you will experience God’s protection in life and live longer.
God created people, not puppets. He gave us the right to walk away from the evil dogs of life or walk towards them. Which route will you choose?
