Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. Genesis 1:14-19 NKJV
When God was creating the earth, one of the reasons he created the Sun, Moon and the stars is to keep track of the days. The light from the sun, moon and the stars will change during different seasons of the year. During the summer, the days feel longer because the sun sets later at night. He said “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years.”
He created the Sun, Moon and the stars on the fourth day after he already created light. He did this so he can direct where and what time of the day he wants the light to shine and the same for darkness. “Then God made two great lights: the greater to rule during the day and the lesser to rule during the night. He also made the stars.”
One reason he created the sun is to signify that it is time to wake up in the morning. He created the moon to signify that it is time to settle down and get some rest because the day is coming to an end.
He created the sun for multiple purposes. The sun is so powerful that it helps give energy to the entire earth. The sun also gives us light throughout the day and gives energy to several plants in the world that humans need for survival. Plants help keep the air that we breathe oxygenated, as well as providing a source of food for humans and animals. If the sun never hit those plants, we would probably die from starvation and a lack of breathable air.
This shows me that everything has a part to play in God’s creation. Do you know your part? Have you been playing it?
