A wise son brings joy to his father,
but a foolish son brings grief to his mother.
Ill-gotten treasures have no lasting value,
but righteousness delivers from death.
Proverbs 10:1-2 NIV
When I was in high school, I hung with other girls who were like me. We were from Christian families with supportive parents and we were all active in church. Our parents taught us right from wrong, and to work for what we wanted. No matter how old you are, what type of parents you have, or how many Bible verses you know; you will still be faced with the task of making choices.
A few of those friends and I used to work at one of the largest and most popular department stores.
One thing I learned from working there is that the store security did not walk around in uniforms or suits. Nooo, they wore shorts, flip flops, sunshades, and often had a bag as if they were shopping. We always had friends asking us to give them the “hook up”. However, management made it clear they would prosecute any guilty employee.
One night a couple of students came in that wanted us to give them the “hook up”. They were not my friends, so it was an easy no for me. However, they were friends of one of my friends and assured her that everything would be fine. Well against her better judgment, she made a choice – A bad choice. As I left work that night, I got a glimpse of her and her parents sitting in the security office. I often wonder if those had been my friends, what choice would I have made. Would I have given them the “hook up”?
What about you, what choice would you have made?
It is easy to say what we would or would not do when we are not in the situation. That choice may have been an easy choice for us, but what about other life choices? What if you had some juicy gossip about someone that you were not friendly with? Would you share the gossip or choose to speak well of them?
What choices would you make?
- Hard work vs being lazy
- Faith or fear
- Lies or truth
What do you choose when facing envy? Unforgiveness? Passing judgment? Like Arsenio Hall used to say, that’s one of those things that make you go hmmm!!

Excellent Deb! Well put.
Wonderful devotional Babe.
Very good
Very good
As the son of a single parent, I never wanted to be one of the foolish sons that brought grief to his mother, that one truth has navigated my life decisions. Thanks for reminding me of one of my life verses.
Well done Deb. Thanks for sharing. “Life Choices “
Well done. It reminded of my mother saying make good choices and don’t shame my name.
Thanks
Deb. I had to go back and add an additional comment about how satan will use people to destroy you with the “Hook Up”. It actually happened to me in high school. The good Lords mercy and Amazing Grace protected me.
